5 Best window manager of the bunch

If you're reading this you probably know the gist behind window managers. In short, they help quickly resize windows in various places on the screen more efficiently than you could do with your mouse.

There seems to be a new window manager released every time I look. I've tried a few of them. SizeUp first, then Divvy, now Moom. All get the job done. But these kind of apps are all about elegance and efficiency. And Moom nails it.

It works like this. When you hover over the often confusing third Mac OS window button (plus/zoom), a brilliant little popover menu appears. It lets you resize windows using a grid you specify (mine is 9x4) or choose a custom configuration for multiple windows.

Like every great geeky utility, Moom has customizable global keyboard shortcuts. I've set up ones to resize a window 50% left, 50% right, and full-size (not Lion full-screen, but 100% hieght and width--sort of a Windows maximize equivalent).

You can also set up window configurations across multiple apps. For example, I've got one that puts TextMate on the left, Espresso's CSS editor in the middle, and Espresso's preview pane on the right. I open the apps, choose that configuration in Moom and the windows snap into place.

Overall there isn't much more one could want out of this kind of app. And it's one of the cheapest of the bunch: under $5 from the App Store.
